Sylvia Plath’s Poem Couriers, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 311

Essay

In this course I’ve learned a lot as a writer such as how to imitate another person’s poem. I used Sylvia Plath’s poem “Couriers” in order to write my own poem “The Delivery.” Through this processed I learned how to create more concrete images that work to the benefit of my poem, something I couldn’t have done before knowing how to properly imitate. I think imitating has made it easier for me to write about images and this has made my poetry more attractive in a way.

Something else I’ve learned in writing poetry is how to edit. I think editing is definitely a necessary step in writing poetry. For my own poem “The Delivery” I went through it about four times in the editing process before I was happy with the poem. With each edit I made the poem better and better. One thing I paid a lot of attention to was adding narrative sentences, something that I did in the second draft. In other drafts I made more lucid images until finally I got to my fourth draft and was pleased with the poem as a whole.

Poetry is good for helping people to express their thoughts, or their deep and private thoughts to anther person. I think its possible for anyone to describe anything in the world but that poets give a special meaning to the mundane. I used to look at horses as just animals to ride but now, after taking this class I think of them as beasts, or carriers of myths. I think it’s the poet’s job to interpret the world in new ways and this in turn makes the world’s secrets someone known and attainable. For my own poem, I hope that people will understand it and the metaphors I used and in reading it, I hope people will gain something new to interpret the world.
