Systemic Approach Versus an Integrative Approach, Research Paper Example

Pages: 1

Words: 346

Research Paper

In the research process, a systemic approach is most closely associated with gaining an understanding of a concept by attempting to draw relationships between various factors. On the other hand, an integrative approach focuses on understanding how an individual behaves in such a relationship by using a variety of techniques (Beutler et al., 2005). Ultimately, it is beneficial for researchers to use a combination of the systemic and integrative approaches in order to ensure that the literature review will provide an adequate reflection of the authors’ ideas (Ridley, 2012).

It is important to consider that one of these methods should not be chosen over the others in all cases, and different research questions may benefit from either of the two. Systemic approaches are valuable in family therapy studies in which the researcher wishes to understand the interactions that occur between families in which one member has alcoholism. An integrative approach may be more effective in analyzing only the one individual who is considered to be an alcoholic. Yet, more comprehensive studies would draw from both methods in order to understand aspects of both the afflicted individual and contributions from his or her family members.

Since it is beneficial for researchers to decide whether the systemic or integrative approach should be used for their particular project based on the topic, it would be necessary for me to wait to choose with method should be used until I finalize my topic idea for the DNP project. To ensure that the correct combination of these approaches are utilized, it would be useful to consider different aspects of the procedure when making this decision. However, I am almost certain that a combination of approaches will be necessary.
