This paper provides thoughts and reflections on the article ” Teaching with the Brain in Mind” by  Erin Jensen  reflecting on junior education (grades, 4,5 and 6).  In particular focusing upon why movement and learning are connected.

The author describes new evidence from imaging techniques such as remote  activity is preceded  by certain thought processes, which are associated with analysis and prediction of outcomes.  These functions indicate a relationship with the cerebellum and action  prior to motor  function taking place.

What is considered a vital part of the learning process, because it is a critical part of regulating t.  Incoming sensory data.  As such there is a value placed upon playground exercises that involve a wide degree of movement.  The stimuli helping to improve the cognitive abilities of both reading and writing.  Functional evidence indicates that exercise is one of the best ways for getting oxygen transport to the brain.  This should be best achieved by taking regular brisk walks.  Voluntary exercise is also set to increase gene expression in order to make improvements in learning and long-term memory capability.

Despite the evidence of the benefits the author points out that some 68% of high school students in the USA do not participate in daily physical exercise.  This is consistent important issue as exercise is seen as a contradictory factor in the development of a healthy brain.  Researcher Terrence Dwyer conducted multiple studies, relative to exercise assignments at schools.  He concluded from his research that those students who took regular physical exercise show not only improve motor and physical attributes but also had a better aptitude for study and academic learning.

The concept of playing has been studied in both animals and children.  Early research suggested that this had nothing to do with competing development of this was later proved to be incorrect.  There is a strong case that these early exercise patterns are a vital component in brain development and stimulating both the education and learning process.  In children and young adults.

The concept of exercise and  movement has also helped these children  who were said to have special needs.  The concept is also reversed using slower movements and exercises to calm hyperactive children.  It was Reynolds [2003], who discovered that movement activities had a profound effect on helping children with dyslexia.

The author makes a number of practical suggestions for teaching.  Amongst these of stopping students from sitting down all day.  It’s important they take a number of brisk walks and get involved with learning processes that involve exercises i.e.  dance classes, gymnasium, drama etc.

It is important to interweave academic studies with physical activities in order to maintain a brain that is receptive to learning.  The evidence is such that exercise on a regular basis promotes brain cell development and cognitive development.  The lack of such activity leads to child obesity and the possibility of a number of life-threatening illnesses that include heart disease and diabetes.  The author leaves us with a clear message – it is time for the educators to get these practices in place.
