Team-Based Organizations, Research Paper Example

Research Paper

Team-based organizations are those organizations in which teams focus on achieving objectives together instead of being managed by a supervisor or manager. The emphasis is on open collaboration. Team-based organizations exhibit certain characteristics such as trust, empowerment, team accountability, and shared leadership. There are many benefits to developing team-based organizations such as innovation, open communication, and better strategies (Markovich). One example of an organization that has adopted team-based model is Cape Coral Hospital in Florida where employees are organized into team and together responsible for results (Seat & Sundstrom).

One of the most effective tool to motivate others is through recognition. A research by Forbes magazine found that top organizations with recognition-rich cultures enjoy lower voluntary turnover rates. This helps companies save on expensive recruitment services and increase employees’ loyalty (Altieri). Recognition also improves employees’ performance (Buzzle) maybe because it makes them feel appreciated and inspire them to work even harder. Employees’ recognition also lets them know that they work doesn’t go unnoticed and makes difference towards achieving organizational objectives.

For recognition to be effective, it should be specific so that the employee know what has been noticed that has earned him/her the praise. Similarly, recognition should not only flow from leaders or managers to followers but also from peers to peers. In fact, peer to peer recognition process has found to be more effective than leader to follow recognition. The organization should also distribute recognition stories. This gives visibility to those who may be contributing the most (Bersin, 2012) and inspire others to work harder as well. Recognition programs are also more effective if they are easy to implement such as rewarding points or items for job well done.
