Team Hoyt: The Dynamic Duo, Research Paper Example

Research Paper

Dick and Rick Hoyt are a father and son team who race together in various competitions, including the IronmanTriathlon. This team is inspiring not only because of their commitment to thecompetitions, but in their commitment to each other. The videos show the intense love and belief that the two men have for one another.

In competitions, Dickwill push Rick in a running wheelchair. For cycling races, they ride n a two-seater bicycle, and for the swimming portion, Dick pulls Rick in a boat with bungee cord attached to a vest around his waist and the front of the boat. When Rick was asked what he would like to give his father, Rick said that he wanted to push him for once. Dick’s heartfelt happiness at Rick’s appreciation is contagious and palpable.

When Rick was born with cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia, the doctors wanted his parents to put him in an institution. His parents ignored the doctors and never gave up on him. They knew Rick was smart and independent and wanted him to have every opportunity at a happy life. As a result of their devotion, Rick had access to a computer which he used to communicate. He was able to complete both high school and college. Despite his physical challenges, Rick grew up into a well-adjusted and accomplished individual.

Like the videos of Dick and Rick Hoyt, this class extended the invitation to explore our own passion and inspiration. When viewing the videos in the context of this class, it was a reminder to not let obstacles stand in the way of our dreams. The ability to believe in ourselves and never give up will remain with us for many years to come.
