Technical Assistance Center of Social Emotional Intervention, Essay Example

Words: 326

Essay

Two websites that will serve as valuable resources for helping young children include the Conscious Discipline website and the reference article for the Technical Assistance Center of Social Emotional Intervention. Both of these websites provide teachers and mental health professionals with resources that they may need to help young students in the classroom. They both focus on behavioral problems, as these issues serve as a barrier to education. As a consequence both the educator and mental health professional must work together using a variety of tools, including those suggested by these websites, to enhance the learning experiences of children in need. In particular, these websites focus on finding an intervention to allow children to change their behavior in addition to focusing on positive reinforcement of a means of doing so. Both websites focus on a social-emotional learning perspective.

Conscious Discipline training educators to integrate excellent classroom management skills with social-emotional learning to help their students. This is closely tied into an understanding of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, allowing educators to recognize that children cannot learn if their more basic needs are not met. This program takes advantage of everyday events to allow children to learn, rather than sticking to a set curriculum. The Technical Assistance Center of Social Emotional Intervention offers a similar program to the one proposed by Conscious Discipline, but the program is scripted rather than spontaneous. Educators who utilize this program are provided with tools and lessons that could be used by their students to learn to correct behaviors in addition to teaching them how to meet their basic needs before the school day. Both programs appear to be effective and are likely selected on the basis of the educator’s preference; some educators enjoy the spontaneity of Conscious Discipline while others will prefer the scripted feel of the program developed by the Technical Assistance Center of Social Emotional Intervention.
