Technical College Is Effective Than University, Essay Example

Underlying differences and comparisons are evident between a technical college and a university. Although the two entities tend to offer students with continuing degrees and education for those pursuing post-secondary, the types of courses and the experience that one encounters is largely different. In view of both, they offer students with diverse styles of experiences in terms of education. In the following discussion, the focus is on comparing and contrasting a technical college and university.

Notably, both technical colleges and universities offer students with degrees following a successful completion of the outlined coursework for that specific degree. Even so, the degrees are likely to exhibit differences because in most cases, universities offer associate degrees that take two years, or a bachelor degree that takes four years to complete (Knight 35). On the other hand, technical institutions can offer associate degrees, although they are not permitted to offer bachelor’s degree. In place of the bachelor, they offer courses that require a period of six months or a year to complete, and upon completion, certificates are offered. Evidently, a university is effective because the bachelor course offered takes more time an indication that students prepare adequately for the career awaiting them.

Accreditation is the process through which a learning institution is stamped for approval. It simply means that the department of education in a country has evaluated the instructors, facilities within the campus, the curriculum, and the school. Such measures are taken in order to ensure that education being given to learners is valuable and of high quality (Knight 82). When a technical college or a university is accredited, it clearly indicates that the programs being offered are credible, and are in line with the basics one is supposed to get following completion of the course. In terms of accreditation, technical schools receive accreditation for specific fields namely art, auto work, and construction among others. In view of the university, accreditation is done to authenticate degree courses offered.

In view of universities, they used to focus much on the learning, academics, and subjects, and opted to ignore offering courses for specific careers. In contrast, technical colleges focused on career-oriented courses that aimed at offering teaching skills one can apply on certain careers. Currently, technical colleges have opted to offer programs such as art therapy and computer science (Burke 56). In view of universities, they have started to offer pragmatic degrees mostly on dental and nursing fields. Even so, the effectiveness of a university comes in handy because the learner has to take more time to acquire the bachelor degree, owing to prerequisites involved.

In view of the two higher learning institutions, the major distinction is manifested in the significance of career choice. Mostly, in universities, students are likely to spend much time in class taking courses that will never be applicable in their career. On the other hand, if a student in the training as a nurse to look after the elderly in a technical college, there is a high chance of spending more time learning biology and mathematics (Knight 112). In that regard, most students prefer to join a technical college if they are in need to joining their careers immediately after clearing school.

A close look at the above comparisons and contrasts says a lot that a technical college is effective because in fact, technical college graduates stand a better chance of securing a job than a university student. Even so, it is argued that students who do well in high school should join universities as opposed to technical college. It is a myth that university education is better and superior than technical college education (Burke 76). Most careers prefer employees with practical skills, which is what most technical colleges offer with their diplomas and certificates. Most professionals prefer college graduates. Skills matters most more than, where you acquired them. In the current job market skills are given priority. Most graduates are struggling to secure jobs because professionals are more interested in skilled persons as opposed to just mere profession that comes with a university degree. The focus for any individual should be developing on the required strengths in order to attain the status of the skilled persons needed in the job market (Burke 78). In the old days, people embraced attaining a degree more than anything else did. People were sure of succeeding by just attaining a degree. Currently, skills matter a lot more than attaining a bachelor’s degree. A piece of paper indicating one holds a degree is not weighty; having the required skills beats all of them.

Conclusively, a technical college and a university are both institutions of higher learning, but the duration a student takes to complete a course differs. Additionally, technical colleges tend to offer students with skills needed in the job market, while universities tend to offer students with so many courses that will never contribute directly towards the career. In view of the above discussion, it is clear that a technical college is effective than university.
