Technology Devices, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 647

Essay

In today’s technologically advanced world, it is a common occurrence to see people walking with their heads down, clicking away on their mobile devices. Research shows that people are addicted to their technological devices to the point that some even take them to bed. Much research that has been conducted by several leading magazines have shown that, a majority of young adults, not only stay on their phone for the most part of the day, but also sleep with them. Even as the amount of smartphone users continues to increase, the age limit of cellphone has steadily risen as well. The amount of texts being sent between teenagers, is both astonishing and alarming, as we have yet to see the social and cognitive negative effects. Even as many laws have been enacted to restrict users from using their cellphones while driving, it has now become imperative to do something about cellphone use while walking.

One only needs to take a good look at most neighborhoods in the summer to see that less children are out playing than used to be seen in the years prior to technological advancements. Today’s children and teens are likely inside playing video games, surfing the Internet, or talking and texting on their mobile devices. This has caused a major decrease in face-to-face interaction and development of healthy social and communication skills, which has already been vastly researched in youth and young children. As it relates to adults, constantly spending so much time using technology results in a lack of engagement with other people. This dependency has raised several flags on the technology addiction that will likely increase as more innovative products are created to make lives easier. Excessive technology device use is isolating people and causing them to withdraw from interacting with each other in society.

What is more alarming is the fact that many people are fully withdrawing their selves from society, while interacting in society. Technological devices also causing people to be put into dangerous situations such as someone being hit by a car while walking into the street with head down and texting, or by being distracted by talking on the phone while crossing the street. There has been such an increase in the amount of people using their phones while walking, it is not only becoming a health hazard to the user, but a safety hazard as well. As many young adults have become so enamored in their phones that they block off the rest of the world. This is an especially troublesome habit for teens. The amount of teenagers that are constantly on their phones is likely to increase, as more precaution, and young entertainers have spoken out about the dangers of driving while texting, and being on their phones in general. This was due, because too often talk on their phones or even text while driving, which has resulted in serious car crashes.

Technological devices can distract people from having social interactions and from being safe out in public. However, even though the world did without these devices before they were invented, chances are that completely withdrawing technological devices from use would isolate and endanger people as well. Without technology, people would be unable to keep in close touch with each other as they do now via their mobile devices and the Internet. In addition, mobile devices can come in handy in emergency situations or in the event that someone is stranded someone or lost. There must be a healthy balance between fully withdrawing from technology and full dependence upon it. It is a good idea to be sure to only use technological devices when in safe places and not while walking or driving. Furthermore, people need to take time away from their devices, and interact in the real world with friends and families, because the will continue to nurture individuals, emotionally, physical, and intellectually, better than any device.
