Essay

The proliferation and rise in social media has attracted the attention of majority of teens who are given an opportunity of interacting with the fellow teens as well as adults. Through such communications, it is anticipated that the cultural knowledge and the social skills of the teen shall be enhance for positive benefit, but unfortunately, the teens have opted to use the sites as a forum for cyber bullying. In most of the times, the consequence that is associated with such bullying is tragic and disappointing and determination of psychological motivation behind such actions therefore becomes imperative. The absence of parental as well as institutional rules in the context of the cyberspace has been responsible for the creation of a virtual island that is the motivating aspect of cyber bullying. Parents and teachers are expected to take proactive measures in trying to help in prevention of cyber bullying and help those who have been victims (Thomas, 2010).

Electronic devices are used to propagate cyber bullying and this makes the act to be more severe as compared to traditional bullying. Victims of traditional bullying may experience a sense of safety while at home but the victims of cyber bullying can fall victim of attack at any place (Thomas, 2010). Cyber bullies fail to grasp the harm that they cause to their targets due to differences in geographical locations between the cyber bullies and their victims since significant distance is facilitated by the use of electronic devices.

Cyber bullying culminates in to repetitive and intentional aggression or harm to the victim and it is indiscriminate of gender, both boys and girls are affected equally. The victim encounters some emotional effects of being cyber bullied. Available research findings have indicated that, cyber bullying is a potential cause of depression among victims. Although cyber bullying has been proven to be less prevalent that traditional bullying, it has been associated with far reaching emotional effects
