Tempting Targets for Car Thieves, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 321

Essay

Theft of automobiles and automobile parts has been a problem for as long as there have been cars to steal. In recent years automobile manufacturers have made it more difficult to steal cars by incorporating electronic keys and other anti-theft devices into their cars. Because it is more difficult to steal entire cars, thieves are now more likely to steal individual parts from them while leaving the rest of the car behind. Some of these commonly-stolen items include wheels, airbags, and headlights.

Xenon gas headlights, the headlights that shine a blue light, are becoming increasingly popular as options from manufacturers and as after-market parts. The xenon headlights that are installed by the manufacturers are difficult to steal, as they must often be removed by opening the hood. After-market xenon lights, however, can often be removed from the front of the car, though thieves sometimes cause significant damage to the car when removing them. These lights can cost hundreds of dollars, making them a tempting target for thieves.

Like xenon headlights, expensive wheels are often expensive after-market purchases. And, like headlights, after-market wheels can often be easily removed without having to star or move a car. Airbags are another item that thieves like to target, as they can be easily and quickly removed from a car with simple and tools. New airbags can cost over $1000, and thieves can sell stolen airbags for a few hundred dollars or more. Removing airbags can be hazardous, as the airbag can deploy, but the risks are often worth it to thieves who can make hundreds of dollars in just a few minutes.

Experts suggest several ways to lower the chance of being a victim of parts theft. The most common suggestions include removing other tempting items from view, such as cell phones and other electronic devices, and parking cars in well-lighted, secure areas.
