Terror in Mumbai, Essay Example

The 2010 documentary Terror in Mumbai was produced by HBO and narrated by Fareed Zakeria. The film follows the terror acts of Lashkar-e-Taiba, also known as the Army of the Righteous, a previously not well-known terrorist group from Pakistan. Three criminological concepts that could be used to better understand this film is voyeurism, terrorism, and paranoia.

The concept of voyeurism would help an individual better understand the concepts presented in this film because the individuals that captured this footage in addition to those who put the film together are acting as voyeurs to expose this justice issue. This understanding is closely tied into the journalistic principles of the piece. Ultimately, the goal of criminologists is to investigate little known behavior, and this is what the film does.

Terrorism is an essential theme of this film, as it investigates the violence put forth by the Lashkar-e-Taiba. From a criminological perspective, this terrorism is concerning because events that are occurring in distant lands cause us to fear greatly. However, it is important to consider that terrorism happens everywhere, not just abroad. This shows that we need to not take this word lightly and apply its meaning to all criminal cases.

Last, paranoia is closely linked to terrorism because we all worry that this will happen to us. While this is possible, it creates unnecessary legislation and political ties that ultimately hinder our ability to remain strong as a nation. It is important to become involved in these issues only when necessary and when they are well-understood to prevent matters from being made worse.

In conclusion, this documentary highlights the fear that such acts strike into the hearts of local residents in addition to individuals living across the world. This phenomenon can be better understood by analyzing it in terms of voyeurism, terrorism, and paranoia. Ultimately, criminologists must work as researchers to gain a better understanding of the information they are presented with in order to prevent criminal activity from occurring.
