Scenarios: The Importance of Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Prevention of Cervical Cancer

Bisi-Onyemaechi, Chikani, and Nduagubam (2018) highlight that there is a need to create and spread awareness of the significance of multipronged strategy to cervical cancer prevention (CCP). The following scenarios are examples of the importance of “primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of cervical cancer” (Schneider, 2015, p.12).

Scenario 1

A 44-year-old female patient complains of increased vaginal discharge. She had had a miscarriage at the age of 27 and was not getting pregnant after that. It worth noting that a patient has never been vaccinated against HPV. Markowitz et al. (2017) recommend patients with the above symptom to get the HPV vaccine as a primary preventive tool.

Scenario 2

Mrs. Drake, who is a 51-year old female patient, has a history of cardiovascular diseases She had a heart failure at the age of 44. She also reported about her weakened immune system. Nine years ago, Mrs. Drake finished her course of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. This year she started to experience pelvic pain. Importantly, a patient received a single dose of HPV vaccine at the age of 30 but was not screened for cervical cancer. According to Duska (2016), female patients who reach 30 years old need regular screening, including a Pap test as a secondary preventive tool.

Scenario 3

A 63-year female patient developed cervical cancer at the age of 59. Mrs. Clementina received the required treatment. The patient reports that she is healthy and she is no more suffering from the symptoms of cervical cancer. However, according to Schneider (2015) the woman still needs tertiary prevention, e.g., chemotherapy and radiotherapy to prevent cancer recurrence.
