The article selected is entitled, ‘In a First, Test of DNA Finds Root of Illness. It was written by Carl Zimmer. One specific thing I havelearnt from this article is that for some time now sequencing DNA has been practiced by scientists in an effort to find bacteria, viruses and harmful organism. However, while this remains a huge undertaking they are pursuing this investigation vigorously and many startling discoveries are being made every day. Some concern still persist as it pertains to finding enough evidence that can be applied in creating resolutions in a medical life threatening emergency. Since accurate diagnoses greatly depends on ascertaining the DNA of pathogens, DNA studies are important to modern science. Scientists are still experimenting with techniques that have proven valuable.
Some specific information I would like see added to this article pertain to how far have scientist gone in their DNA pathogenic research. While the article offered case scenarios in which due to lack of specific evidence causes of some conditions such as encephalitiswere difficult to diagnose; it is relevant to state the progress that has been made in this regard. At the moment it was cited that specific diagnosis is being approached from the premise of a guessing game rather than a scientific process. For example, more clarity should be given in describingunbiased next-generation sequencing. It was mentioned that at this pointy I their research here is where must focus is given. However, explanations as to what it is and how will next-generation sequencing impact the identification of DNA pathogens is not provided. Besides, they have developed software to advance the process since methods presently being used take a very long time to make a diagnosis. Again specifics of the software being applied has not been the communicated in the article.
Natural selection according to the article means how biological traits are manifested in a generation or species and specifically to the events presented in this article these pathogens in DNA testing contain characteristic that differentiate them from others in making a distinct diagnosis. From an anthropological perspective natural selection refers to elements of a population culture and features that distinguish them from others.
Holisticaccording to highlights offer in this articlepertain towards achieving some degree of homeostasis during testing for pathogens’ presence by investigating their identify from a broader perspective of nature origin and peculiar features. Anthropologically, viewing a populationin its entirety such as culture, physical elements, and history is engaging in a holistic analysis.
Words from chapters 1-4-definitionsand their anthropological interpretations are:
Chapter 1: Primates means members of the mammalian specie. In relation to this article and DNA interpretations primates would have DNA properties peculiar to its specie.
Evolutionrelates to change occurring anywhere according to the article.Specifically, with associating change with DNA identification evolution explains genetic adaptations within cells composition.
Chapter 11: Speciesrepresent the manner in which biological elements are organized/identified as units such as mammals, amphibians, reptiles and the like. With reference to DNA diagnostic interpretations deducted from the article units of biological elements specular to pathogens must be identified for the organism causing encephalitis to be detected and classified.
Genes are characteristic features of human cells. Genes are responsible for identifying DNA
Properties in cells
Chapter 111:Gametes are cells that fuse with another. In relation to the article DNA cells must link up with each other
Somatic cells are special cells used in the natural selection process. The DNA is found in cells of plants and humans and also in pathogens.
Chapter 1V:Sickle cell anemia is a disease whereby the cell assumes a sickle shape, which inhibits its oxygen supply. According to the article the DNA is the medium through which this gene is transferred.
Hybrid is a merging of two or more genes to create a new species. This is also practiced in DNA studies to create new types of cells.
