That Correlation Is Not Causation, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 262

Essay

What do we mean by the statement, “that correlation is not causation” and give examples of both

Correlation basically indicates how one matter is connected to another. Understandably, it could be analyzed that in the form of creating an experiment on understanding how one product affects the behavior of the buyers, correlation experiment specifically tries to draw some elements that could establish the strength and relation of both matters. Naturally, this could be done through measuring the impact of one on the other through probable assumptions and actual experimentation.

On the other hand, it is assumed that the measure of causation is based on what one matter actually does to the other as expected. This is more dependent on a proven fact rather than an inconclusive change of attitudes of people to certain matters that occur in the community.

The difference of correlation and causation could be likened to the instance by which a campaign against smoking actually affects the vision of the buyers about the said product. Considerably, a part of the market would respond to it through heeding the warning while some others would set their attention to their own desires of smoking without considering the campaign’s call. This correlation between the campaign and the market is rather defined by the measure of causation which presents the fact about what happens to one when he or she smokes. The situation insists on the fact that the independent factor in this situation is that of the elements of causation while the dependent factors involve the measures of correlation between elements involved in the process.
