The 5 E’s and Gagne’s 9 Events, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 291

Essay

The 5 E’s and Gagne’s 9 Events of instruction are used throughout the lessons to ensure that students will be able to master the academic content in spite of their disabilities. All lessons use the principle of engagement because they ask students to relate the content to their own lives. Furthermore, students explore these topics by engaging in hands on activities and personal research. They are then asked to explain, evaluate, and elaborate on their work, individually and in groups, throughout online discussions, completion of projects, and project presentations. By the end of the unit, it is expected that students will be able to self-evaluate, determining the efficacy of their work.

The implementation of the 5 E’s overlap with many of the events in Gagne’s nine events of instruction. By using a hook at the beginning of each lesson, the attention of the students is easily gained. Furthermore, informing them of objectives related to the topic is included because by providing students with an understanding of the direction that they are heading, they will be able to more readily accomplish their academic goals. All lessons also scaffold to build upon and recall prior learning, and students are given choice about their projects so they can make these connections on a more individual level. Furthermore, all content is presented through personal exploration in a manner that also provides learning guidance to ensure that the students are meeting lesson objectives. Each lesson has a performance component, which either requires the completion of a paper, oral recording, or presentation. At this point, feedback is provided and the performance is assessed. Finally, students are all asked to reflect on what they learned to enhance their retention and to transfer this new knowledge to additional practical applications.
