Smart phones are all around us. Some people state that they help people stay connected with friends and loved ones, while others argue that they create distraction for people when they would need all their attention. The below essay will examine the above arguments in detail.
Smart phones provide internet access and entertainment in a pocket. They are useful for people who are on the go. Several applications are available that make everyday life easier. Smart phones can be used as a diary, a navigation system, or even an email client. They can retrieve information from the internet in just seconds. Further, smart phones can serve as a device to interact with friends on different channels. They make sharing photos, life events, and achievements instantly easy. Smart phones used for social networking have the capability to enhance online group learning experience for students. While using smart phones in classrooms for collaboration has great potential, it is also important to note that many students play games on them while they are supposed to listen to the teacher. Keeping smart phones turned off in classrooms can improve learning outcomes, and reduce distraction. Still, some people use smart phones to record lessons with the permission of teachers, and listening back can improve their learning experience. Some learners can take a photo of the whiteboard as well to remind themselves of the topics and the connection between ideas discussed.
On the other hand, smart phones can distract people while completing important tasks. As they offer online games and group competitions, some people get addicted to playing on them, and they will neglect their other tasks. Turning on these phones – even on silent mode – can be distracting not only for those who play on them, but also classmates who are trying to concentrate. The use of smart phones in workplace can distract important equipment, and it can be dangerous in hospitals. The signals that smart phones use can interfere with life saving equipment, and X-ray machines as well.
Another way smart phones can create distraction in every day life is more dangerous than missing out on learning activities. Several serious injury road accidents were caused because of the use of smart phones, and this is not only true for drivers. Pedestrians who are on a game or their social media account while crossing the road can fail to recognize hazard. According to Zeman, 25 percent of car crashes can be tied to smart phone use. This means that smart phones detach people from reality. While people would think that they can cross the road blindfolded, this is not the case. There are some tasks that require full attention, such as driving a car, or crossing the road. Likewise, if a bank manager was allowed to play on their mobile or post on their Facebook page while dealing with clients, they would be more likely to press the wrong button, and make a mistake that would affect the customer’s finances. They could transfer the wrong amount, or apply the incorrect interest rate.
Overall, it is clear that smart phones provide both advantages and disadvantages for users; depending on their behavior. By teaching the new generation about the correct, safe, and acceptable way of using these devices, accidents can be avoided, and benefits can be increased.
