The Adventure of a Lifetime, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 356

Essay

“Don’t you ever relax?”  This question was asked by my mother as I peered at her over the book I had been reading. “This is relaxing,” I insisted as I stuck my head back into the book and continued with my reading.  Ever since I can remember books have been a part of my life.  As a young child I started out reading book series such as The Goosebumps, Sweet Valley High and, The Babysitter’s Club.  I would wake up early Saturday mornings and while my brother would turn on cartoons, I would head straight to the page I had left off of the night before.  For me, reading has always been an adventure, a way to connect to the larger world from my own living room.

One of my favorite books, thus far, tells the story of a young boy who sets off to find his father during The Great Depression after the death of his mother.  The title of the book is Bud Not Buddy.  The title refers to the main character’s name.  His name is Bud and his mother who passed away before the story begins, always made sure that he knew his name his was Bud not Buddy.  “If I wanted you to be called Buddy then I would have named you Buddy” Bud recollects her telling him before she died.  Ultimately, this story is about a little boy’s search for a family to belong to in the midst of the harsh reality of The Depression.  The musical and historical references of this book are unlike any I have read before.

In conclusion, this was just a small example of the literary world that reading has shown me.  From the search of a little boy to find a family, to the adventures of a group of young girls trying to run a successful babysitting business, reading has the power to take a person into parts of the world that they never dreamed existed. I still get excited whenever I encounter a new book that peaks my interest.  I look forward to reading and letting each new story unravel through the words on the pages.
