Description of the Model

The Baldrige model is a systems approach to management of projects or evaluation of standards. This concept first emerged as an award offering feature whereby in1988 the Malcom Baldrige award evolved. It was intended to identify and appraise exemplary management practices/performances. Essentially, it is believed that by 1992 when more principles defining the model were developed this was the first attempt at standardizing performance through scientific research. Ultimately, the award was refined to reflect an allied systems approach  to  measurement and evaluation strategies in appraising standards for tests and job performance excellence (Borawski, 2008).

For example, the diagram above demonstrates relevant features encompassing an organization profile, showing the environment, relationships and strategic situation. This is perceived within an inner and outer circle function. Consequently, the top of the outer circle links with measurement, analysis and knowledge management. The inner circle, however, describes the nucleus of the organizations as it relates to measurement, analysis and knowledge management. Elements that are deemed important are found encircled in the orbit of leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, workforce focus, operations focus and results. The diagram shown above has beenused in interpreting the first Baldrige assessment model. It was empathized that ASQ’s measurement, analysis, and knowledge management criteria are the foundation elements of   this performance management systems framework (Steel, 2014).

Plans to apply the model

My plans towards applying this model in nursing education primarily pertains to planning strategies  for developing  testing and assessing criteria  for student’s classroom performance. Mainly. It has been reported that measurement, analysis and performance management are the  core features of this model. They together enhance organizational function. For example, my organization is health care education. These resources are very useful because they encourage managers to gather data and apply evidence towards interpreting information retrieved from customers’ performance. In my situation the customers are my students.

In nursing education standardized testing is crucial to rating students’ performance during a test. However, my proposition is going beyond applying Baldrige model only to standardized testing, which is relevant, but towards the overall performance of students as professionals. When the model is perceives within an organization point of view designing strategic focus, in my view point, it is relating to managers the strength of evaluation and continuous assessment in promoting personal as well as profession excellence. More importantly, as an educator in applying this model the isolated concept of training without enforcing knowledge as to how who professional expertisewill affect the organization’s growth is considered.(Baldrige Performance excellence program , 2014)..

 Rationale for choosing the Model

The rationale for me choosing this two fold application of Baldrige’s model in my nursing education organization, first is its propulsion towards evidence based interventions taking into account the organization influence on excellent performance as well as deterrent to it. Ultimately my goal is to use this model as a guide to refined assessment practices within my organizations. Contemporary professional practice is evidence based if ways of conducting tasks are rendered scientific. Nursing is a science and there must be enough evidenced base alignment in assessing students’ performance as professional as well as students in a classroom situation  when conducting tests (Baldrige Performance excellence program , 2014)..
