Research has found the best way to prevent crime is to have an organize participation by residents in an effective neighbor watch program.

Definition of topic: Crime prevention through the use of neighbor watch is a successful social program that is influential in preventing crime (Vallee & Caputo,2011).

Three Main Points: The three primary reasons the neighhood watch programs work is people getting involved with participation, collaboration police working with occupants of the neighborhood (Hebberecht & Balliergeau,2012) and crime report tools open hotlines to report crimes in process or potential crimes) Graycar & Prenzler.2013).

1st Main Point: The people of the neighborhood give the home burglary power to break-in any home when people decide not to participant in the neighborhood watch. The burglary will return to the same neighborhood when they feel the people of that village or neighhood is not united(Lab,2014).

Main Point 1: Active Participation-The active participation from the occupants of the neighborhood are important to the success of the neighborhood crime preventive programs. The advantages or characteristics of a neighborhood that participants in the preventive program will allow a child entrance when someone is following them or report any suspect activities in the neighborhood. There are some families that do not want to get involved because of possible retribution of the home burglars’. However, they often change their minds when participating in the meetings that share personal experiences of home burglaries.

Sub Point: Crime Prevention agencies-The first crime prevention strategy is providing the neighborhood with the local contact information of all the difference agencies that can help with home burglaries to counselling after the burglaries. The fire department can be a resource especially when the family cannot reach the police. In addition, a listing of social agencies, police department and shelters that can help with children.

Sub Point: Neighborhood Leaders-The neighborhood meetings are to help identify the participant’s that may volunteer to be first and second contact while organization meetings. The leaders will be the organizers of monthly meetings to ensure everyone is up to date with the last crime prevention strategies for their neighborhood. The children in the neighborhood need to understand which homes are safe houses or in case of catastrophic events. The leaders will be the liaison with the police keeping them up to date with monthly issues that have not been resolved in the neighborhood.

Main Point 2: Collaboration Police and Community-IN the media today, we have negative images of police officers in the community and on the streets. However, it’s imperative that the police and the community members meet to discuss how they can keep the neighborhood safe and allowing the policeman to build relationships and trust. The perception that police are not protecting the people is not good and these types of crime prevention meeting will provide the children and the parents to learn more about the police department.

Sub Point: Police Training-The police department need to trained on communicating and continuous contact with the people of the neighborhood. This training should include soft skills and follow meetings to ensure the program is on track and all the people understand the police officers mission. The police training should take place at least 2 times per year to become familiar with the safety needs of that particular neighborhood. The prevention programs sometimes do not continue because the police officer may not be equipped to handle these emotional home burglaries. The police making a living handling conflict however additional training is needed for face to face with home invasion victims.

Sub Point: Community Training-The community training should start with the children because the stigma that police officers do not help can be counteracted with building relationships. The community training is a chance for the occupants of the neighborhood get to know each other and learn more about how to prevent home robberies. In most neighborhood, beyond the wave hello and goodbye they do not interact to improve the safety of their own neighborhood. The meetings promote camaraderie, trust and relationship building meetings that will help in times of stress from the home robberies.

Main Point 3: Neighborhood Crime Hotlines-The neighborhood hotline is important because this is the first line of defense is everyone reporting any suspicious activity. The hotline that is dedicated to the police dispatch allows the response time to be quicker and every minutes counts during a home invasion. The neighbors that do not have a cell phone or just a landline needs to understand different ways to contact police or a neighbor.

Sub Point: Rewards-The human expectations that everyone would call in some type of suspicious movement in the neighborhood. However, the offer of a reward could be a simple gift basket or fruit basket. The rewards part of the crime prevention program is just another opportunity for the people to meet and congregate. The more the people meet together, the more they become more interested and involved in the success of crime prevention program. The reward can be a simple trophy at the end of the year for all participants or just a thank you card for protect the community. The reward does not always have to be monetary because some people appreciate being recognized.

Sub Point: Confidentiality-The neighborhood will participate knowing their identity remains confidential and they have the option to leave their name or remain confidential. The confidentiality will ensure that all people in the community will participant because they do not have to share their personal information. In addition, to promote the use of the confidentiality hotlines, they must know they names will be protected unless they release their own name. The media exposes the witnesses many times without the thought of personal privacy and some people are intimidated and scared their names will be all over the television. The reassurance of confidentiality can lead to the success of the program. In light of the police questionable force in the media today, it would be a great time to use confidentiality. This would be a great way to rebuild that connection between the community and police department.

Conclusion

Restate 3 main ideas-The three main ideas are Participation, Collaboration and Hotlines. The neighhood watch programs work is people getting involved with participation is the first key. The second key is collaboration police working with occupants of the neighborhood and the third step is a quality police hotline for the community.

Closing statement

The government has supported many different programs while spending millions on crime prevention, however, the best proven methods for crime prevention is neighborhood watch programs. The goal of the paper will be to provide some solid statistics and resolutions that will prevent home burglaries.
