Art is a significant way of expressing the real-world happenings and elements such as power within society. One of the most prominent artworks is the statue of Augustus of Prima Porta, which represents Augustus Ceaser – the first emperor of the Roman. The two hundred and eight-centimetre tall marble statue Augustus’ statue was discovered in the 1st century AD and is preserved in the Vatican Museum (Pollini, 2017). The Augustus statue is one of the most notable artworks that illustrate power in society.

Elements of Power on Augustus Stature

Augustus is perceived to be the most prolific emperor of the Roman Empire. Augustus’ statute has been designed with numerous art to show his achievements. The stature is designed in military attire with Augustus pointing to depict him issuing instructions to his army. The breastplate of the statue is designed with small arts in Augustus’ chest. The minor artworks show other generals bowing down to Augustus. The bowing down implies the achievements of Augustus against his enemies during wars. The breastplate further shows Roman’s gods. The presence of roman gods shows the power and influence Augustus had as a military warrior and a powerful spiritual individual who had the ability and authority to communicate with the gods (Pollini, 2017).

Conclusion

Art is a communication technique that promotes observation. The Augustus statue is an epitome of how art can represent power Augustus’ figure depicts him as a powerful military man in the Roman Empire.
