The Catholic faith presents man with an understanding that life has many mysteries that have been created by God, but that He has given man the unique power to understand nature. While we were punished for the sin of man, He is still loving and has provided us with the power necessary to end many of the issues that exist in the world today. Intellectual activity is at the core root of Catholic identity because the messages that God has provided us in the Bible serve as guidelines and standards for how to live life. By studying biblical literature, we are increasing our own understanding of His work, which allows us to delve more deeply into these mysteries. Therefore, science and religion are not unrelated concepts and work together so that we may improve the human experience.
An important consideration in Catholicism is the love that one is expected to have for every man. As a consequence of this love, Catholics are expected to engage in charity, in which the more fortunate assist the less fortunate. Intellectual activity stems from this requirement, as modern medicine has evolved primarily from the want to help others. Through scientific innovation, man has been able to develop many effective vaccines in addition to advanced ways to treat a variety of sicknesses. God has empowered us to make these discoveries from the want to help others. Although human suffering is a part of life, we occasionally escape these evils when we demonstrate that we love one another.
Attending a Catholic University is of utmost importance because in the modern world, many individuals believe that science and religion cannot work hand in hand. Catholic universities provide a unique experience to their students, which involves an integration of these two belief systems to encourage progress in a variety of academic disciplines. Academic environments benefit by integrating religion because it reminds both the students and the staff of the reasons they wish to achieve their scholarly goals. Since religion and academics are both concerned with understanding and becoming closer to God, whether through knowledge or science, it is beneficial to consider of these factors as one entity.
A second advantage of attending a Catholic university is the sense of community that our religious bond brings. All students share a deep belief in and love for God, which is unique compared to many other colleges and universities. This love is integrated in our daily lives and everything we do, which is extremely important to our drive to succeed in academics. The Catholic affiliation will allow for the association of all subjects with religion so that we may understand a variety of fields in a manner that is more deeply meaningful to us.
Of additional importance, attending a Catholic university is important to me because it will allow me to educate many of my friends concerning myths they may have heard about the Catholic faith. Since Catholicism promotes the idea of academic study, I find it absurd when I hear people say that Catholics believe science is a myth, in addition to related comments. Building this community and making it stronger will therefore allow me to dispel these untrue beliefs that are sometimes held by non-Catholics, and would potentially encourage others to see the beauty that the religion holds. As the year continues, I hope I will find ways to strengthen my arguments on this point.
