The Civil Rights Act, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 265

Essay

Some have called the Civil Rights Act of 1964 the most important piece of legislation of 20th century America. Do you agree?

I do agree that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was probably the most important piece of legislation passed in the 20thcentury in this country. A house divided against itself cannot stand, and so it is with a country. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was instrumental in setting in motion a precedent that would eventually break down many of the barriers the country had against its own growth, as a nation.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 did many things, particularly ending segregation in public places and schools, as well as racial and gender discrimination in employment. It was also instrumental in legislation being passed on other issues such as the right to vote. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was an important part of 20th century legislation because it caused a nation to have a good look at the condition of itself and it resulted in a catharsis and a flushing out of parts of society that had a choke hold on the country in terms of advancement, innovation, evolution and peace. Today’s society in America is what it is because of the Civil Rights Movement. I do not believe that this country could have prospered as it has if the valiant men and women of the Civil Rights Movement had not done what they did, so that those of us living today can be more free, and that includes all races. The hater is just as much in bondage as the hated.
