Essay

One of the roles which I find very important in my life is that of a dog-owner. My dog is an exceptionally handsome Mittelschnauzer. His name is Silver. As any dog-owner would tell you, a dog is more than a pet. Silver is someone who I have shared my room with for more than three years. I cannot say he understands everything that happens in my life but he can surely tell apart joy and sorrow and he is the most sincerely sympathetic creature in the world. It is a pleasure to take him out because he is an ideal of dog beauty. People keep telling me, “Why don’t you have him participate in dog shows? He would be a champion and earn you a small fortune?” But I have never considered this opportunity seriously for three reasons.

The first reason is that such events a really stressful for dogs. At a dog show, dogs are well aware of the competition and many do not like it. I want Silver to feel that he is unique for me and that my love is unconditional. He does not have to earn money for me – he is a friend.

The second reason is not having enough time for it. I am always ready to spend an extra hour walking my dog – we enjoy it both. But I do not think that preparing to shows and spending time on them is worthwhile.

Finally, I do not find dog shows a wise investment. Although the prizes are really high, entrance fees are also substantial, and no one can guarantee that Silver will win and it will pay off.

So, we continue living together with Silver and enjoying pure friendship unsoiled by competition and commerce.
