The Commencement Speech You’ll Never Hear, Essay Example

Essay

The function of education in the society is defined through the products that it releases in the world. The students, being the primary individuals to receive instruction through education are considered as its products. Training and practice are among the primary aspects of education that makes up the capacity of a learner to actually use what he has learned from class. However, in the speech of Neusner, it is evident how he detests the fact that most scholastic institutions today lose sight of the real reason why they have been established. In his writing, he argues that schools today lack the capability to hone their students and bring them into a realization that practically brings about a sense of definition as to how they could utilize the lessons in practical situations. Because of profit-oriented goals, schools have been presented by Neusner to be more concerned about passing the students rather than making them understand what they should prepare for in the future.

On the contrary, I strongly disagree with what Neusner indicates to be realistic on the environment that schools are thriving in today. As a student myself, I see that the training I get from college is evidently strong enough in imposing practicality into my mind. The activities I am asked to complete within deadlines give me enough pressure that brings about a sense of realization as to what the future holds for me as I hope to complete my studies and land a good career in the future.

I do consider that most colleges today do what they can to assure that the students receive good guidance. I also believe, based on experience, that they are placing enough pressure on students to hone particular characteristics and attitudes that the students would later on be able to utilize in dealing with the actual problems and situations of the actual world. Nevertheless, I do think that gaining complete gist from the lessons and activities presented in class remains dependent on how the students view the situation as supportive of the future that they are preparing themselves for. It is evident that the reaction of the students play a great role on defining how education is able to play the function it is expected to accomplish for the society as a whole.
