The Continuing Impact of the Technocratic, Psychological, and Industrial Forms of Socialism

Socialism is a philosophical way of thinking about collective or state ownership of goods and services in order that a more egalitarian society might exist. Socialism, in its purest form, opposes capitalism and is critical of it because of capitalism’s concentration of wealth to a disproportionate segment of society.

Under Technocratic Socialism, agents of the state manage systems of production with the best interests of all at heart. This is also known as scientific management, where experts are in charge of various portions of management. An example of this would be if a corporation’s stockholders transferred control of the company over to a small group of people who worked for the state instead of the company. This small group would represent every person in the state and not merely the few people who own the company. The late H. G .Wells of The War of the Worlds fame was a proponent of this philosophy. Today we see and hear of numerous decisions made in the name of good business because of their technical merits. This is reminiscent of this brand of socialistic thought in that it espouses administrations of science.

Psychological socialism grew out of labor movements as workers sought representation and negotiation. This form of socialism finds strength in numbers s people united can realize more than they can alone. Adherents to this way of thinking favor a welfare state, public healthcare, and publicly funded education.  The mission with psychological socialism is the protection of, chiefly, the urban proletariat.  Labor unions are a noticeable byproduct of socialism as a psychological ideal.

The person who operates as an Industrial Socialist is less concerned with the redistribution of societal wealth and more interested in fundamental questions that permeate values, behaviors, aspirations, and mindsets of those who form a society as a whole. What social progress means is more important than the material structures that inhabit the culture. Examples of issues that dominate the agenda of industrial socialism are aggression, ambition, sexual mores, education (its purpose), and parenting. Industrial socialism is less materialistic and more moralistic than other progressive forms of governing.
