The Corporate Grind, Essay Example

Essay

The Corporate Grind

  • Most women who seek out companies to work for that offer the potential of an uninterrupted career do so with the full intention of capitalizing on that benefit.
  • However, when some of these women see their babies—and especially if they require extra attention—their maternal instincts kick into high gear resulting in their often feeling it necessary to make the choice between raising their children and corporate life.
  • This could explain in part why many women still do not accept the opportunities offered them, but it is not the whole story. To climb to the top rungs of the corporate ladder often requires long working hours and extensive travel, which for some women is very difficult to do, especially if the husband and the children are not supportive but very opposed. If children get sick—or even parents—it is the woman who is expected to stay home.
  • Sylvia took her job, in part, because, according to D & T literature, she could, when she had children, work only three days a week and even work from home some of the time without being penalized. However, the momentum she had been riding gradually began to fade because she was no longer fully in the loop. Often when staff and clients looked for her, she was not in the office. Eventually Sylvia realized that she may not be able to advance working this way and decided to quit. While Sylvia realized after the fact that she might not be able “to have it all” many women do so before and do not even apply.
