The Cost of Obamacare, Research Paper Example

The introduction of the healthcare bill in the United States commonly known as Obamacare has come with a lot of benefits and drawbacks. For example, the introduction of the bill increased positive health outcomes besides increasing the number of Americans accessing healthcare services. On the other hand, the bill has drawn significant criticism due to the fact that some analysts feel that it has caused the loss of more than 2.9 million jobs on a yearly basis. Many writers have also written articles to express their concern on the issue of Obamacare and how it is affecting the economy of the United States in several ways. Among the articles that have been written include those written by Chris Conover, Marc A. Thiessen and Glenn Kessler. As a result, the articles are up to answer some research questions presented in this paper. Among the research questions include whether Obamacare will really cost 2.9 million jobs a year and if the claim that giving out food stamps to people will make them poor relates to Obamacare.

Summary of the Articles

Among the articles used to present an analysis in this paper is the article titled ‘Obamacare will cost 2.9 Million jobs or more a year.’ Written by Conover, he has explored how he had observed that Obamacare will cost the economy a million jobs only for the figure to turn out as an underestimate years later (Conover 1). In a summary of the article it has explored the factors that have led to the loss of jobs and they include the expansion of Medicaid, the new taxes on labor income, employer penalties and exchange subsidies (Conover 1). In the second article by Marc A Thiessen titled Obamacare’s $70 billion pay cut, he has explored the losses that Americans have undergone with the introduction of the healthcare bill. In his translation of the article, it has been stated that the bill has caused a 1% pay cut for every working American (Thiessen 1). As a result, the bill has overstepped its initial promises announced by president Obama where he claimed that its introduction is an opportunity to every American (Thiessen 1).

Glenn Kessler has also written an article concerning the cost of Obamacare. In the article titled ‘No, CBO did not say Obamacare will kill 2 Million jobs,’ more than 2 million jobs will be killed by the Obamacare (Kessler 1). However, the result of the choices that people will make so that they will continue to enjoy healthcare subsidies (Kessler 1). Thus, the article has specifically directed towards the facts that have come as a result of Obamacare.

Analysis of Article to answer Research Questions

While working part-time, Americans will still be subjected to healthcare insurance covers (Thiessen 1). As a result, the government of the United States is encouraging its people to work less and still get to enjoy the benefits accrued from working part-time. With this in mind, it is related to the aspect of giving people free food and encouraging them not to work. However, the government has not agreed with this perspective and instead, it is busy setting its own agendas. Additionally, Obamacare targets the middle and low income earners in the society (Thiessen 1). According to its working criteria, the higher the salary of a person, the lower the subsidies they are bound to receive from the government (Thiessen 1). As a result, it is seen that this formula discourages people from working hard to receive a salary increment. In addition, low income workers are finding it comfortable to work because the level of their subsidies is higher and thus, satisfying.

With Obamacare around, people are seeking to work in environments that best suit their talents (Conover 1). As a result, the people will find it more comfortable to work in their job position. Additionally, they will have fewer working hours because of not willing to strain and in the process, they will earn low wages. The low wages will turn the movement of the economy to the south because it will experience a low Domestic Gross Product (GDP) (Conover 1). With the people enjoying high subsidies, the economy will lose out on billions of shillings and in the process; more people will lose their jobs because of lack of proper profit to support businesses and companies.

Working more or less will not determine whether a person will earn good or bad. Among the reasons that explain this scenario is that the middle and low class working citizens are bound to earn more in subsides (Kessler 1). As a result, people in the middle calls may actually earn lower than low class-working citizens. The realization is demoralizing and people may make decisions that my impact the general well-being of the United States. Taxes coming out of Obamacare also discourage working hard and in the process, they will play a big role in losing out on millions of jobs and billions of dollars. From the observation, the similarity developed to giving people food and making them not to work seems real and valid.

Conclusion

Obamacare may have come in good will but it is not doing good as it was expected. For example, it has been analyzed in this paper and realized that there are significant losses of jobs due to its introduction. In addition, the bill has caused severe economic impacts because it is lowering the GDP of the United States and it making the country to accommodate lazy citizens out to take advantage of government coffers. However, if revised, the drawbacks are reversible.
