The Crusades, Essay Example

The Crusades were originally known as the Pope of the Catholic Church. These were military campaigns series undertaken between the 11^th and 16^th century by the Western European countries. These campaigns were initially formed by Pope Urban II to have control over Jerusalem, the Holy Land, by taking up the cross and having to restore Christian control. 10 was the total number of crusades engaged in Western Europe, but not all had the original purpose at heart. First mission of the Crusades was to assist the Byzantine Empire. This was after they were requested to help in fighting off Muslim Turks expansion. However, as time elapsed, Crusades came to be described as wars against heretics, pagans, and those members threatened by the Church with excommunication. Moreover, a set of Crusades led to an alliance between Muslims and Christians, while the other was called against fellow Catholics[1] (Jonathan Howard, 2011).

People’s motivation concerning freeing the Holy Land was all about having to restore the land back to its original nature. The land overflowing with milk and honey, as such, the people exhorted France knight and European people. Thereby, men had to leave their wives and children in the quest of delivering Palestinians from Turks[2]. Therefore, the motivation of the people was in the quest to reduce the terrible horrors inflicted on the infidels of the Holy Land.

The Crusades were not successful because they were not able to achieve their original purpose. In the Fifth Crusade, it was successful initially, but its success chances were destroyed when quarrels ensued between the leaders. Therefore, with time, this meant that he was cut off from the society of Christians[3]. As such, the military leaders present in the Holy Land were not in a position to accommodate them. Such are the factor that led to the unsuccessful mission of the Crusaders.
