The Cyprus Question, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 488

Essay

In the past few years, despite UN intervention, the situation in Cyprus deteriorated to the extent that a military invasion of Turkey is momentarily a matter of time. The internal situation is quickly deteriorating, with atrocities being committed on both sides (Hannay 4). Particularly with the ascent to power of the Greek Junta last year, the Greek-Turkish tension reached a climax (Joseph  391). Denmark salutes the urgent intervention of the United States that successfully prevented the escalation of the conflict (Joseph  391). However, we stand today at a crossroad. Either we act decisively, and stop this war, or support the consequences.

Denmark was always firm in calling for peaceful negotiations between Cyprus and Turkish, in view of finding a peaceful solution in this conflict.  It continues to do so in this moment of great tension between the Cypriot and the Turkish Nation.  Denmark calls for the continuation of peaceful dialogues and a restraint from both sides, so that a new armed conflict might be avoided (UN Resolution 254)

On this day, the maintenance of the UNFICYP forces within the country for at least another year is paramount in stabilizing the internal situation (International Organization 978).  Denmark was one of the states that intensively supported the creation of a peace keeping force, which came into being in 1964 (United Nations Security Council Resolution 186). Today, Denmark reaffirms its support for this peace maintaining force and believes that new efforts should be made in order to bring the two parties together for a dialogue, in the presence of the UN Security Council.

Denmark deplores the poor internal situation of the civilians and calls upon the two nations to make efforts in order to ensure that the Human Rights are respected within the country. The massive killing of civilians, the extremely poor living conditions of the internally displaced refugees and the lack of respect for the Human Rights must be immediately investigated by the Security Council and solutions must be immediately taken by Cyprus to re-establish a secure environment within its borders.  Particularly in the case of women and children, the massive genocide is unacceptable. We call upon both parties to respect Human Rights and take into consideration collateral victims when thinking their next strategies.

The issue of the Cypriot refugees that flee outside the country’s boarder is again, a serious one. A commission for refugees must be established in order to offer aid to the refugees. Global cooperation is needed in order to ensure that refugees are provided with medical assistance and that their needs are covered. We must not forget our responsibilities towards the Cypriot people and must provide them, to the best of our abilities, with a safe shelter.
