Essay

From the time of my childhood I still remember a particular smell – the smell of chocolate butter. The lovely blend of cream and cocoa, chocolate butter smelled tender yet with a tinge of bitterness. For me it was the smell of the desired and forbidden. To my deepest sorrow, I was badly allergic to all chocolate-related products. A tiny piece of chocolate led to fever and terrible rash the following day.

But children are mostly optimistic. At least, I was an optimistic child. I did not contemplate the consequences. I felt good at one moment and bad at another and was unwilling to see the relationship and draw any conclusions. I wanted the fabulous chocolate butter. It was a passive longing. I never even asked for it knowing that I will only hear a reluctant refuse. I won’t tell you the story of my adventures in pursue of chocolate butter. There were none. I suffered silently.

Of course, my parents understood that I wanted chocolate. When any sort of it was advertised on TV, they stole sympathetic look at me. But I did not want chocolate. What I wanted was chocolate butter which I had tried before I was found allergic to it. My parents bought me marshmallow and marmalade, jam and honey. But I was not consoled.

Now that I have grown up, I am no longer allergic to chocolate. I can eat chocolate butter every day but… I don’t want it. I don’t like the taste of it. It is only the smell that still fascinates and brings back the memories of my childhood sufferings which now seem so minor.
