Pages: 1

Words: 356

Essay

DISC styles are an effective communication tool in helping to communicate in given situations. The DISC style that is complimentary to my communication style is S (Submission or Steadiness). (Wilkinson, pg184) This communication style is similar to my personality and stylize for the way I communicate to others in a group or team setting.

In meetings my behavior generally reflects the behaviors shown in “at their best column”. (Wilkinson,pg 184) Not only do I try to remain passive in letting other speak, but I show my steady personality by being supportive of others suggestions. Many times in intense situations members may speak over others and dominate the conversation, in meetings, my communication styles allows for me to the peacemaker when tempers flare between team members. When others speak I make it a priority to pay attention and be open to change in order for a proactive flow of communication between members to continue to flow.

In order to be an effective facilitator I must take into account any dysfunctional behavior that might interfere in the flow of communication within the session. It is important for me to understand the different DISC personalities for a behavioral evaluation method to better understand and work with team members, and gives role-play scenarios for dealing with each personality. (Slowikowski, 2005) To become an effective facilitator the book suggests that I must address problems by “approaching the participant privately or generally, empathize with the symptom, address the root cause, get agreement on a solution.” (Wilkinson,pg 185) In using my own communication style I will be mindful of being supportive of everyone and given everyone a chance to voice their opinions. Protect others from getting attacked and help the team members come to an effective solution. These suggestions are outlined to provide effective facilitator leadership.
