The Discovery of Antibiotics, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 300

Essay

The discovery of antibiotics was a significant move in the field of medicine. It led to a reduction of human deaths resulting from microorganisms and agitated more research studies about drugs. However, a lot still has to be  conducted  since the microbes are becoming resistant  to the drugs. This resistance to drugs has required scientists to try and come up with new drugs once the previous drug becomes resistant.

This idea of coming up with new non-resistance drugs indicates an impending danger in the field of research. It is not a total solution to this problem. It can be a waste of time and resources. A lot of money is invested in the research that in the end does not have a total solution. If scientists can make a drug that will end up being resistant, it means they can make a drug that cannot be resistant. There is the need to invest in the research rather than in the sale of pharmaceuticals. The government has to play a bigger part in monitoring the availability of essential drugs other than stocking the fast moving drugs for market reasons. Humans have to win the battle for microbes this soon. Reluctance in the field of microbial research will pose future problems that will be difficult to solve.

Drug resistance will soon turn to be a disease itself if measures are not well taken. We, therefore, need the government to subsidize antibiotic research. It should also remove tough restrictions in the manufacture and marketing of the drugs. Doctors should work hand in hand with support groups so as to succeed in the fight against microbes. Patients need to be advised that antibiotics are not a total solution to their problems. It is, therefore, time for the government to curb this problem before it becomes uncontrollable.
