Domestic violence occurs in multiple ways, affecting members of all socioeconomic backgrounds. The level of violence and the relationship between the victim and the abuser serve to specify the dynamic and ultimately gauge the level of criminalization of the abusive act. In all forms of violence, the commonality exists in the dominating force of the abuser over an individual who is usually weaker, either physically or in terms of subordination.
Cycle of Violence
Unlike violence that occurs outside of the home, domestic violence follows a basic pattern in its occurrences. At each stage in the cycle, the abuser vies for complete control over the situation and the victim and seeks ways to further isolate the victim to create a sense of ‘helplessness’ (mvwcs.com, 2006). The only varying factor may be the extent of the violence that occurs.
Sixparts comprise the cycle of domestic abuse.First, there is the abuse component in which the act of violence is committed against someone. The abuser will then feel remorse for his actions as well as fear that he may commit the act again (domesticviolence.org, 2008). As the guilt continues to plague the conscience of the abuser, the mind then tries to placate itself with rationalizations, the third step of the cycle. There are usually some ways the abuser justifies his behavior – he blames some action of the victim as the reason for provocation. After this, the abuser will try to reestablish normalcy (musc.edu, 2011). He may begin to act as though nothing has happened or to overcompensate by acting overly loyal, kind or charming toward the person he abused. Finally the abuser will undergo a series of fantasies in which he will be able to abuse the victim again, sometimes in retaliation for some perceived slight committed by the unsuspecting victim. The cycle then comes round to the abusive act that began the cycle.
Taking Control
By recognizing the cyclic nature of domestic violence, a victim of abuse may finally be able to recognize the presence of abuse in his or her own home. Once it has been established that domestic violence is taking place, there are several measures the victim or spectator may take to regain control of the situation. The victim can finally see that the abuse is not his fault; he should immediately seek help. There are numerous hotlines, counseling centers and other forms of shelter for victims of abuse. If speaking to a stranger is uncomfortable, then the victim is encouraged to seek family and friends for support.
Signs of Domestic Violence
Knowing the cycle of violence in situations involving domestic abuse is an important step in being able to identify domestic disturbances. Recognizing the cycle from within the abusive scenario is different however from being able to see the classic signs of abuse in someone else. As an outsider to the situation, it is important to be observant as the victim often tries to act as though nothing is wrong.
Immediately apparent signs of abuse come in the form of scrapes or bruising; in severe situations, broken bones or stitches may be present (mayoclinic.com, 2009). Not all domestic violence is relegated to physical trauma, though. There is verbal abuse that can take its toll on the victim emotionally and mentally, draining self-esteem.
A more subtle sign of an abusive relationship is a constant fear in the victim, as though he or she is worried that merely saying something or acting a certain way will ignite the abuser’s wrath. The abuser is very controlling and may humiliate or criticize the victim subtly or constantly. The victim’s self-esteem will be very low, and often their access to money or transportation is very limited. The abuser tries to control all facets of the victim’s life.
Conclusion
All cases of abuse should be reported immediately to avoid further damage. Often the victim feels helpless and remains in a bad situation because he or she is unaware that there is help readily available. Patience and understanding is needed to help victims of abuse; with just a simple sign of compassion, trust can begin to develop in the life of a victim who has likely given up on human compassion long ago.
