The Dominion of Force, Essay Example

Essay

Only he who has measured the dominion of force, and knows how not to respect it, is capable of love and justice.” (Weil, p.192)

This passage, in reality, has a much deeper meaning than it already blossoms. Simone Weil once said that people in the contemporary world surprisingly believe in the notion that the world is governed by force and it is only force that can bring about justice. However, she admits the absurdity of the notion. Furthermore, brings about idealists. In my opinion I believe that she is referring to idealists that do not easily cope with reality and have more far-sighted visions about future and can reject force.  Most realists in this case unfortunately  accept force as the ultimate master that dominates over them. Later whether  voluntarily or involuntarily they come to respect force.  Justice and love is hard to see for most people in cases when force is the dominating concept over people and the first two seem almost invisible. Weil, however, states that though it might not be so visible, it is still in people’s hearts.  In addition, I believe that only those who understand the definition of virtue and go about living in the boundaries of virtue can reject the concept of force as evil and give in to love and justice. In Weil’s Iliad or the Poem of Force she brings forth the factor of one being strong or weak inside which can relate to this passage. Those people are not aware how they measure the dominion of force. In addition, the strong is not aware that he is strong and the weak does not know that he is weak. However, the measure of power is measured in the passage above: if the person measured force to a point where he can reject the dominion of force and not respect it, only  then the understanding and accepting love and justice will occur.
