  2. IV: Whether or not the students listen to music.
  3. The independent variable would be the specific students elected to listen to music while taking a test in addition to those in the control group who will not listen to music while taking the test.
  4. DV: The grades received on the test.
  5. The dependent variable will be the grades received on the tests. The scores of individuals taking the test while listening to music will be compared to the scores of the individuals taking the test while not listening to music. Both groups will have their scores averaged separately and then compared.
  6. The experimental group is the group that will be listening to the music.
  7. The control group is the group that will not be listening to the music.
  8. Data Collection Procedure: Two groups of 20 students each will be given a subject level appropriate test covering math skills learned in the most recent unit. The experimental group will take the test while listening to music and the control group will take the test without listening to music. The tests will be marked “music group” or “silent group” for further statistical testing. The “music group” tests will be scored to determine how students have done and these scores will be averaged. The “silent group” tests will then be scored to determine how students have done and these scores will be averaged. The two averages between the two groups will then be compared. If the average test scores are higher in the music group, it could be said that listening to music while taking a test helps increase academic performance.
