The Entertainment Media as a Catalyst for Societal Behavior, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 364

Essay

The media has typically been a valuable resource for citizens, because it provides us information pertaining to what is relevant and educates us about situations occurring around the world. However, both informational media and entertainment media has transformed in a manner that attempts to provide us with entertainment and opinions rather than a general understanding of society. As a consequence, this information is not simply a report of what is occurring; it is directed towards us in a manner that causes us to be interested. This drive causes us to be concerned with events that we would otherwise not concern ourselves with, indicating that media is a catalyst for societal behavior.

Lately, media companies, whether they are entertainment new or music industry, have decided which music to push to make a better profit. As a consequence, we admire many celebrities who appear to be less than intelligent and slightly fabricated as a manner for the companies to make quick money. The quality of such entertainment has decreased over time, and there is currently little room for independent artists and entertainers to make a breakthrough of their own. For example, the pop music put forth by One Direction and Ariana Grande is very repetitive and simplistic. These singers are marketed more for their looks and personalities than their talent. This is a stark contrast to the celebrities of decades ago, such as the Beatles, who came to fame on their own because of their talent.

Even though the media companies dictate which celebrities we should accept into our lives, this phenomenon is not necessarily positive or negative. In the age of the internet, it is possible for many entertainment lovers to find new artists on their own and to support them in a manner that pushes major media companies to begin publicizing them. A disadvantage is that this process has made music and other modes of entertainment more of a marketing scheme than a direct want to entertain the public, but the market is currently what we allow it to be. If we show that we are unwilling to support these choices, the media organizations will ultimately change because the public is needed to support them financially.
