Hazardous waste is part and parcel of the industrialization. As the need for industrially manufactured material is ever growing, the amount of hazardous waste that results from the processing increases. Hazardous waste possess a threat to human beings and all life forms in general, as such, the inherent need to dispose of this waste cannot be understated. In the process of disposal, hazardous waste is often transported from the source to the point of disposal. Considering the nature of the commodity being transported, it is important to query, does the transportation of hazardous material affect the environment? This is a multifaceted issue that has to take into consideration a myriad of factors.

The research will look at the inherent risks associated with hazardous materials. This approach will be interlaced with a focus on the specific risks that are associated with the different means and modes of transport that are available in the transportation of hazardous material. The generally accepted regulations and standards are vital at setting the baseline for the transportation of hazardous material. The research will delve into the different standards that are accepted across the industry, comparing a number of transportation and storage standards.

The research will finalize with look into the actual effects of the transportation of hazardous material when done ignorant to vital industry standards. This will include an analysis of past major transportation catastrophes that have been recorded and studied.

The research will source information from a number of sources. This will mainly include government websites and electronic sources as well as journal articles pertaining to the transportation of hazardous materials and the effects of hazardous materials on the environment.
