The Epidemiology of Disease States, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 307

Essay

The epidemiology of disease states is complex on many levels; therefore, it requires an examination of the different principles that are likely to be effective in managing outbreaks as they occur in the hospital or in other healthcare environments. I have not had any personal experience as a leader of an outbreak investigation; however, I recognize that it is the responsibility of nurses to be proactive in leading the effort to understand the nature of the outbreak and to be effective in working with patients to manage outbreaks and prevent further occurrences.

My prior experience with outbreak investigations was generally positive because the nurse in charge had prior experience in this endeavor and demonstrated positive leadership skills at all times. She was highly knowledgeable of epidemiologic principles and was effective in her responsibilities to the investigative team. When nurse leaders undertake this responsibility, it is important to identify specific areas that will serve as the primary focus of the intervention to ensure that patients receive the proper attention and focus to eradicate the disease outbreak as best as possible. Knowledge regarding the outbreak must be forthcoming and nurses must be proactive in communicating the urgent nature of the outbreak to facilitate effective results. This also reflects a greater need to acknowledge the demands of the practice environment and to recognize how to gain a better handle on the situation at large to prevent further diagnoses. Therefore, with proper communication and a forthcoming approach, it is possible for nurses to lead effectively when an outbreak has occurred and to demonstrate a strong understanding of their role in improving the circumstances as best as possible. Since I lack experience as a leader in this type of investigation, I recognize that I must prepare for such an event with a high degree of epidemiologic knowledge to be successful in this process.
