Essay

The harvest (La Cosecha) is a documentary film that is earnest and talks of three teenage men. Perla, Zulema and Victor travel with their families, across southern Texas, northern Florida and northern Michigan to pick crops during the harvest season. It gives a description of how migrating children become farm workers at a remarkably tender age in the U.S. The working children harvest food eaten by Americans because they are extremely poor and by working, they help their parents. A muckraking agenda displayed on the documentary with characters having a melancholy soul.

The documentary gives a clear picture of the suffering faced by farm workers in America in 2009 by giving preference to children and imposed labor laws. Their average annual earnings are not enough for their basic needs and therefore, the three men endure all the pain and suffering n order to provide for their family. Despite the scorching sun, physical danger from pesticides, and emotional burden bestowed upon the young children they still have to persist. The children have to sacrifice their education and separation from peer groups and parents because they need to work. Advancements in education and emotional development dwindle for them because they lack the time and resources to engage and live a comfortable life in America.

Many are the people who migrate to America with the vision of succeeding and helping their families back at home. However, for many, this is not the case because, they have to undergo back aching labor in order to survive. It is high time for the government to enact labor laws that incorporate the needs and demands of immigrants working in agricultural fields. Children should be given the opportunity to learn because it enables them contribute to development measures in the country and become future leaders. The film creates awareness of dreams held by working children. It emphasizes on the necessity of helping them achieve equality in education and economic rights.
