Pages: 1

Words: 284

Essay

The Five Pillars of Islam are the five basic acts followers of Islam are expected to perform. These are the Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawm, and the Hajj. These five pillars are observed by all sects of Muslims and fulfilling them is believed to bring rewards to one while here on earth and in the afterlife.

The Shahada is the pledge and basic tenant of Islam. It translates as, “I testify there is none worthy of worship except Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” When worshipping, Muslims repeat the Shahada in prayer.

Salah is ritual prayer that must be performed five times a day. At dawn, noon, late afternoon, dusk, and evening, Muslims recite Salah while facing towards the Kaaba in Mecca. It is meant to be a personal communication of devotion and gratitude with Allah.

Zakat is obligatory financial giving based on the principle that all wealth comes from Allah. It is based on accumulated wealth and expected that all Muslims who can afford it will give out of a duty to care for the poor and needy.

Sawm, the fourth pillar, is the act of fasting during Ramadan. During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from dawn until dusk. Its purpose is to feel nearer to Allah, share the experiences of the needy, and help to adopt a disposition of gratitude to Allah.

The Pilgrimage to Mecca, the Hajj, is the fifth Pillar of Islam. It is made during the Islamic month of Dhu-Hijjah and must be completed by every able-bodied Muslim at least once in a lifetime. Traditional clothing and rituals unique to the Hajj are performed. The Hajj is meant to show one’s devotion to Allah.
