Pages: 5

Essay

The Food Lifeline serves those who have no food or can’t afford to buy food to feed their families, this valuable organization services several places across the United States that consists of food banks as well as food pantries that supply food to the people in their city. The greatest need that this organization provides is that keeping people across America from going hungry or suffering from starvation, the need is all about keeping houses full of food and providing a need to starving children.

The Food Lifeline serves over 2,900 people a month, these people come from all walks of life. The Food Lifeline is a major distributor to food places such as the Grocery Rescue which distributes food to over 70 different locations where all food pantries, and even places where children go to after school such as children centers where the kids have a place to hang out before their parents come and take them home. The Grocery Rescue is also a place that distributes food to places such as Sam’s Club and Walmart, two of the most well-known food storage facilities on the planet. Food Lifeline also supports the free lunch program at school for kids, this alleviates any possibility of any child going hungry because they can’t afford to buy lunch at school, this organization has seen to it that children that go to school every single day should at least get a meal in their bellies so as to keep from going hungry if they don’t have food at home. Kids that go to school every day look forward to getting a free lunch because of this wonderful organization’s need to prevent a child from ever going hungry.

The organization’s drive to help kids in after school programs consists of helping kids make the right choices about the food they eat, this organization cares about kids and the nutritional value of healthy food. Another aspect of this organization is that kids not only have a place to play and hang out for the summer but they also have a place where they can get healthy food during the summer months of the year. Children are not the only ones to benefit from this valuable service, homeless shelters and those within them also benefit from the organization’s food drive and supply. The organization is constantly looking for people to help needy families get the food they need as well as the right nutrition that their children need in order to grow up properly, the organization has even made it possible to not just find food but find a nearby food bank or food pantry that’ll get food to those in dire need of it.

Personally, the experience that I would gain volunteering for such a well-worthy cause is being able to understand fully why some people who you think is doing okay, isn’t. The experience would also teach me what it means to worry about where the next meal is coming from, and making sure that the next person or people don’t have to wonder about the same thing especially if they have children. The volunteering aspect of this experience would instill in me people skills that I can later use for future volunteering opportunities as well as developing empathy and an understanding of people who are from different walks of life than myself. It’ll help me really put my life versus theirs into perspective that people everywhere need help.

How I would explain this experience in a job interview is by saying that the volunteering experience has taught me how to look at the bigger picture as far as thinking about others, it has shown me that everyone needs a little help despite whatever situation they’re in; I would also say that the experience has shown me the greatest good of all, giving back to a community at large or those in it.

If I were going to arrange any service activities, it wouldn’t be anything small such as a ball game or even a charity, I would have an Olympic size group of activities that’s like the Olympics combined with a charity so as to raise money for all of the hungry families in not just the city but the entire country. I would have a marathon run, and all sorts of fun games that would go toward raising money to feed starving families all over America as well as countries that are also having food problems as well.

I would deliver my services around the clock, 24/7; people are starving every day and food banks aren’t always open or the staff of these food banks and pantries have families that they have to spend their time with. My services would have trucks, delivery cars/taxis even employ a few policemen to help out. My services would always be readily available because hunger is an ongoing thing that people in difficult situations can’t do anything about, and proper nutrition is the key to keeping people alive as well as full of energy to be able to do something about their situation.

The benefits that I would provide through my service is that everyone who works for me will get 3 meals since they’ll more than likely be there working through the nighttime, and probably the morning as well. I’d provide a competitive working wage where people who work for me will be able to keep food in their houses as well as keep their bills paid; it’s not about making sure the organization is running effectively, but keeping those working for you happy so they’ll be able to continue giving their time to the service.

How I think this will go great with my application to a nursing program is the public health experience which would put me on the path of educating people about the importance of a balanced nutritional meal as well as the importance of ensuring that the children of those parents are familiar with the educational value of healthy food for a growing child or their growing children.

The probability of providing the service right now is a little low but I’m looking to do it more in the future because I know that I’ll be able to dedicate more time to doing this and providing such a valuable service to so many in need. Food nutrition volunteer work, there is no greater good than giving one’s time to such a worthy cause. It can’t be argued one bit that organizations like this have more than enough people to help get the food out to those in need, but the fact that they are always looking for people to help them with their hunger curing cause is more than wonderful. Overall, food nutrition volunteer work at a food bank or food pantry would always be my first choice because since I’ve done it before and have the experience then I am more than willing to lend a helping hand to those who are already working to give back.

The value of volunteering is important for everyone to learn and partake in at some point in their lives because it is easy to say that you’ll never end up like the person you’re serving or helping but in the back of your mind, you have to wonder; what if that was me? A person with children to feed and no job with very little money to pay bills, it is a dire situation that no one should ever be in, but those who are can count on the fact that there is someone looking out for them which is important; a person can’t put a price on the things that they’ll learn as they’re volunteering. People need help and helping them get the help they need by distributing food to them will make you appreciate what it means to be thankful for what you have.
