The Future of Music Distribution, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 587

Essay

Introduction

With the current available technology and legal framework, many business models can be used to distribute digital pop music efficiently. Besides the subscription and webcasting services, artists can utilize elaborate websites that are interactive to act as fan tools for communities. The websites are more than tools of marketing, and they have content and services for subscription, which change frequently. This benefits pop music artists through selling concert tickets in advance and obtaining bonuses. In addition, virtual storefronts can operate as artists’ creative action vehicles.

Another strategy is the use of Downloadable audio files, which is enticing since they do not need more time or bandwidth for them to be downloaded. The files also require little storage space. For instance, The Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG) came up with MP3s. Members of the Moving Picture Expert Group are representatives of both industry and research, and their work is to improve the distribution and the quality of digital pop music and other digital media. Their standards are intricate, and they contain several components that can be applied to diverse aspects of a video or an audio file. Similar to MP3s, latest standards indicate an emerging technical and creative potential. Aside from certain processing and encoding benefits being presented, this strategy can be useful in creating more interactive or vibrant musical experiences.

The purpose of Copyright Law is to protect creative work value. Making copies of music that has been copyrighted without authority subjects a person to criminal or civil liability. Recent changes in copyright law legislation will have extensive results in pop music and digital content generally. Copyright Law provides for the principle of fair use. Provisions for fair use and the rights of the consumers in the digital setting have been made. Several conflicting views have been given concerning the consumer’s rights in using copyrighted pop music. Due to advancing technology, it is essential that artistic and technical exploration be encouraged aside from being maintained. The legislation should be changed to provide for independence of pop music artists, the audience engaged and amateurs in order to make it possible for pop music to be distributed without breaking the copyright law and hindering access to pop music.

Today, the music industry has tremendously been changed by availability of the internet and merging of computing and audio technologies. The changes in technology have led to pop music being readily available and accessible to more people than before. Due to the easy access and availability, pop music is not very profitable. To curb this, technology should be changed in order to ensure that the pop music artists have more control over distribution and marketing of their music. This is because it will enable the artists distribute and promote their music without relying on any label or company.

Distribution of pop music is less profitable in the internet era than it was in the previous era of CDs. This is because pop music is more readily available in the internet than it was in the previous era, and it is prone to piracy because of the difficulty of controlling piracy in the internet. The less profit can also be attributed to the fact that the availability of more pop music gives consumers a wide range of choice hence subjecting pop music to high competition, which in turn reduces the price of pop music. My favorite pop song is “Wide Awake” by Katy Perry. This is because the words speak about healing from the ending of an affiliation that has been negative to an individual.
