To minimize negative aspects women may encounter when working for an international company, ongoing training, empowerment, and support programs should be available.

All employees–including women–should be valued equally. When working internationally, women are seen first as foreigners and then as women. Using internal support staff in advance of arrival to establish credibility can help. Displaying feminine reserve and appropriate dress for the cultures in which women are working is important.

Companies have assisted in several ways to help break down barriers impeding a woman’s progress, an important one being assuring women of uninterrupted careers when raising a family. Also of great help is daycare and assistance for elderly parents within the global workplace. Helping women to be accepted into the male-dominated corporate culture, enabling them to improve their networking systems and making it possible for them to participate in more education and training programs are beneficial.

As global boundaries—and, hence, diversity—increase, performance standards change.

Behavioural differences will develop, but the cultural personalities will be determined by the majority members. Most employees will see that diverse employees have the ability to complement each other and be more effective in their jobs. Diversity in the workplace and in society at large is becoming more accepted, appreciated, and better utilized.
