The True Story of the Tortoise and the Hare

When I was sitting at the local pub with Fox and Hound, the rude Tortoise walked in.  He came up to us, interrupted me in mid-sentence and challenged me to a race.  He said that he saw the race I had with the Mole the week before and that he knew he could beat me.

Of course I laughed at this notion.  The idea!  A Hare losing to a Tortoise?  That’s impossible!  I made up my mind right then and there that I was going to teach this Tortoise a lesson.  I finished my drink and we went outside to begin the race.

As soon as the race began I jumped to a huge lead.  I was going to embarrass that dumb Tortoise.  He thinks he can challenge a Hare to a race and get away with it?  I don’t think so!  All of a sudden I was running along and started to get woozy.  My eyelids began to droop.  I slowed down and my legs became very heavy.

Just like that I fell to the ground and blacked out.  I don’t remember much except that I only recall waking up and seeing the Tortoise about to cross the finish line.  I jumped to my feet the best I could, but my balance was off and I was running in all directions.  Just as I gathered my bearings the Tortoise crossed the finish line.

I felt like such a failure.  What an embarrassment!  The Tortoise immediately went to the newspapers and started ridiculing me for having lost to a Hare.  He said that he had just avenged the loss of his friend the Mole and that I would think twice before challenging someone to a race again.

Later that night, back at the pub, Fox and Hound pulled me off to the side and told me that they knew why I had lost.  Apparently while I was busy talking to my friend the Spider, the Tortoise put something in my drink.  I knew that I was feeling fine before the race and as soon as it began the drug in the drink kicked in and it was all over for me.

I contacted the papers and told them what the Tortoise had done.  The International Foot Race Commission for American Affairs took immediate action and suspended the Tortoise’s ability to race anyone or anything for up to 3 years, pending investigation.  He was found guilty by the IFRCAA.

The Commission told me that they could not overturn the ruling that the Tortoise had won that race.  Still, everyone now knows the true story.  I am very grateful for such amazing friends like the Fox and the Hound.
