The Healthcare System in United States of America, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 536

Essay

A social system/policy which I have chosen to explain is healthcare and the polices related to it. The healthcare system in United States of America has been classified the worse among Western nations because the population is burdened with huge heathcare bills. Some people lose their properties just to pay for healthcare in America. Besides, many others file bankruptcy because they cannot pay the bills. Essentially, many in the society have concluded that it is cheaper to die than live with huge healthcare bills, which affect them psychologically, hindering healing, wholeness and health generally. They are always in debt if illness strikes at their door and it becomes chronic. As such, the psychology of debts, illness, dying and living a poor quality odf life become their major hazard of life.

There are many ways in which my knowledge of psychology can impact the system and policies for improvement in the socio-psychological well-being all Americans affected by this healthcare dilemma. Firstly,   psychology of illness theories advance through a biopychological model that health and illness are greatly influenced by interactions between and among biological, psychological and social factors. Further psychological factors that create illness and disease affecting health outcomes are a person’s emotional state, inability to cope with issues in their life and environment, turmoil in their emotions along with thinking negatively.

These are the areas that ought to be regulated if I am to improve a client’s situation when illness strikes. Psychologically a person becomes ill in America before even thinking about their wellness the burden of how they will pay for healthcare becomes foremost in their minds. This delays restoration to health. Therefore, an emotional intelligence program can be very effective, especially, if patients are admitted to hospital or when attending doctors’ visits. The feature can be presented by training nurses to carry out the process or designate someone trained in psychology like myself to administer the treatment.

Emotional intelligence would not remove the health care bill, but the client can use coping strategies so that the issue would not affect the outcome of his/her illness. During the treatment administration I would first find out what the particular disturbance is about. An untrained practitioner might at first glance blame it on the illness. These must have come from some sensation/perception source, which must be brought to light. I know that the sensation came from thinking not about the illness so much, but the bill that will come in the mail after. The perception if forecasting an inability to pay it and possible consequences that could occur

These sensations and perceptions must be controlled or changed to ones that would produce more positive emotions. Again the thinking must be removed from bills towards getting better. Reassuring the patient that everything will be fine alone cannot resolve such a disturbed personality. It is advised that healthcare facilities further post reassuring evidence that offers information on how healthcare can be affordable guiding patients towards resources that they can use. The memory is a powerful feature impacting one’s psychological state of mind. The subconscious mind stores information and when it is needed brings it forward. So the final step in this emotional intelligence treatment is allowing patients/ clients to talk freely about their concerns.
