The HIV and the Elderly Community, Research Paper Example

Pages: 1

Words: 308

Research Paper

In USA, around one million people have HIV, but only two thirds of this populace is conscious of their diagnosis (Grabar, Weiss &Costagliola, 2006).Whereas HIV infection is usually thought to affect the youth, there are a rising number of people over 50 years living with the disease. The research paper discusses about HIV-among the elderly and summarizes three websites that discuss HIV related issues among the elderly.

HIV issues among the elderly

UNAIDS and WHO hold that of the forty million patients living with HIV, around 2.8 million are at least fifty years of age (Grabar, Weiss &Costagliola, 2006). With the launch of antiretroviral therapy in the last two centuries, survivors of the disease following diagnosis have risen dramatically. HIV has changed from a severe infection process to being handled as a long-term health condition (Grabar, Weiss &Costagliola, 2006). Those patients who receive medication live stay alive for more years and the figures of fresh diagnoses in older people are increasing. Clinicians have to be conscious of these developments and grow to be familiar with the control of the disease among the elderly community.

I selected three websites to help gain deeper insight into the topic. First, http://www.cdc.govis a good website that gives a lot of statistics about the disease. It has a good visual design and good content. Second, http://www.aahivm.org gives drop down menus that make it easy to navigate the website. Thirdly, I selected http://www.nia.nih.gov/health/publication/hiv-aids-and-older-people because it is a credible source of information about elderly people.

The course taken by the HIV outbreak has significantly changed in the last three years. The change is mainly due to rising awareness and execution of prevention plans.  The availability good websites has also helped spread knowledge about HIV infection among the elderly.
