Impact of Tourism

Tourism has become one of the worlds must widespread global leisure activity. Tourism can be in the form of domestic travel or international tourism. The world has become a major travel destination for tourism that allows men, women, or families the time for recreational, leisure, business or religious activities. The tourist industry has exploded into the global market causing major economic growth that has exceeded the expectations of many countries that catered to women and men tourism travelers. (Myers, 2010).The impact of tourism today has created a tremendous economic and social impact globally that is growing exponentially all over the planet (Garcia, Vazquez & Cortes (2015). The continued growth of tourism has several major impacts on society, employment developing countries, culture and the environment. The tourism industry both domestic and international traditionally been considered to be seasonal travel that cannot sustain an economy. Tourism has a positive impact on the economy by bringing millions of dollars to the country, resort and hotel revenues increase, food services, and retail and transportation services (Rukuiziene, 2014).

Economic Stability

The tourism business brings economic stability to the region along with more employment. The industry of tourism has proven that the economy can flourish, jobs are created, and travel revenue can sustain an entire city, town or country. The tourism industry has excellent economic impacts to a country more than the oil and automobile industry while quickly becoming the world’s largest industry. In addition, tourism accounts for tourism employment globally at 258 million (Chai Feng, 2015). The best example is the entire State of Nevada survives from the economic funding for the population of 250,000 people and the majority of the society is hired by the tourism industry (Doherty & Moore, 2011).  The benefits of global tourism began with improving the economic center of any town or country in rural or developing countries. The developing countries have access to the diverse people from around the globe that are seeking leisure or family fun. The tourism success can be sustained with the host community providing enough fun and relaxing events along with good service will keep them coming back year after year.

Contemporary Issues

There are several contemporary issues that are important to the future of the tourism industry. The first contemporary issues is the use of technology that is changing and evolving from the days of utilizing a travel agent to the e-commerce growth that allows the tourist to book, change, and schedule their own travel arraignments.  This is globalization of tourism that is promoting international connectivity which cannot grow exponentially without some problems.  According to Untamed Path (2015), one of the contemporary issues that must be examined is can the tourism industry be sustainable in the midst of globalization.  In an article by Lee and Wu (2012) indicated that globalization brings competition for revenues globally from private industries, government profits and business investors does not translate to economic and social growth of the local communities.

Tourist Impact to Events

The Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas is one the most fun events for adult’s activities with many events all rolled up into one location. The tourist can be seen painted in neon or fuzzy boots with very little clothes cover the body and plenty of alcohol at every location. The Electric Daisy Carnival has a place for everyone that is ready for a rave like atmosphere but no causal wear will be out of place. The candy bracelets are so plentiful that every guest and resort workers will have an abundance of the braces. The bright lights engulfed the entire facility similar to a Chinese Fourth of July show. The grounds are filled with lights, scantily clad resort workers, and a scattered flowers resembling an organized music concert. The event can get crowded in the evenings because of the major musical hub for different genres such as electronic dance music, techno, rock, funky technology and dance punk (Travelhymns, 2015). An added benefit is the cuisine which is a caravan of mobile food trucks that serve everything from hot dogs to Mexican food to Italian dishes.

There some negative things to consider with The Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas. The customer can pay for expensive tickets for one of the major shows which sometimes the line are extremely long and they could possibly be turned away for the event is full to capacity (Travelhymns, 2015). The place can get so crowded and rowdy because of the alcohol therefore it would not be an event to take children. The primary crowd includes adults but the younger generations of students who will engaged in marijuana and other drug activities. The heat can reach over 100 degrees which tourist have to be careful of dehydration and the unbearable heat has tourist getting sick. It should be noted that the Vegas (2015) indicated in June every year 300,000 people travel to The Electric Daisy Carnival for the festive events.  The Electric Daily Carnival has some tremendous clean-up cost because many of the party items are beads, paper, glitter, bags, liquor bottles and trash. In addition, the social problem with some many people drinking that leave a major mess including the bathroom facilities.

Oktoberfest in Munich is the world’s largest beer festival which the TripAdvisor (2015) has credible positive reviews concerning the beer festival events. The positive feedback from the TripAdvisor (2015) showed the German people are hospitable and they make the tourist fell like part of the family. One of the consistent statements by tourist is the ease of catching the train to Oktoberfest in Munich. The Oktoberfest has the roller coasters which add to the fun because the tourist feel like they are visiting parts of Disney World without the lines. The entrance to the Oktoberfest similar to the City Fair that has fun games and entertainment side by side for miles.

The Oktoberfest caters to their customers while adopting local traditions that welcome the tourist as an extended family member. The quality of the staff is noticeable with the friendly guides to help you find attractions to the security officers that ensure the families are safe and protected. The German resort hospitality teams are unmatched in quality, professionalism and customer oriented staff that will take the time to help any tourist with a smile.

The excitement of the Oktoberfest in Germany has all the exciting attractions to convince tourist to book trips one year in advanced. One of the favorites from the tourist is the German food and the friendliness of anyone within minutes of arriving. The Oktoberfest beer festival German natives have a good understand of how to treat tourist while making sure the Oktoberfest beer attractions cater to the tourist.  The German locals make some of the attractions family friendly and educational by encouraging the family to join in learning traditional customs.  The display of German civic pride is shared with tourist while ensuring tourist have the best cultural experience. Nevertheless, the Oktoberfest has some overpriced vacation packages because they know the majority of loyal customers will pay top dollar.

The negatives concerning the economic impact of tourism on places like Oktoberfest in Germany and The Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas find their foundation of specialized workers from outside of the region. The native workers may be left with the remedial positions that do not require certifications or any specialization. The overall effect of tourism spreads revenues for the economic benefit of the tourist attraction while the employees remain on the outside of the economic benefits. The tourist industry makes reoccurring revenues for the hotels, resort workers, travel registration industry while the native workers are paid low wages (Cut-Lupulescu, Dincu & Borlovan, 2014). They may have a large number of low paying jobs that may not have benefits and many times at minimum wage.

The secondary problem is resorts are a business that reduce resort worker house when the travel season is slow. As a result the resort attraction will lay off employees, reduced the staff or hours are reduced to part-time.  The globalization and advance technology has the investors and private business creating opportunities for massive return on investment in the tourism industry. The same growth and success that is dominating the tourist industry globally does not end up being a positive experience for the local native workers. The innovative technology aged requires many of the native workers to become familiar or learn with all the new e-commerce and e-banking services. Conversely, the tourism attraction owners are not investing in Human Resource training models to ensure the locals receive the same technology that is in demand.

Tourism Cultural Event

Tourism travel has become the most rewarding pastime for families that is competing with the likes of baseball and basketball as a cultural or leisure activities. The traditional tourist travel within the United States without leaving the region or country has become a thing of the past. The tourism industry has exploded in the domestic and internationally markets more than ever before in history. Tourism has reach the pinnacle of success because many countries are utilizing their beauty of their environmental to draw more people to their islands (Demonja, & Gredicak, 2014). Tourism is travel for business, family, recreational or leisure trips seeking to experience the cultural and recreational advantages of the attraction.  The tourism service industry has some tangible and intangible benefits such as comfortable transportation, immaculate hotel accommodation and many fringe benefits by the hospitality industry. The cultural experience is integrated in the accommodation such as Hawaii giving tourist flowers and Hawaii T-shirts or the Germans giving them the hospitality of their homes or the Disney World giving out Mickey Mouse is all about the culture. The tourist will treasure those trinkets or bracelets or flowers for a life time.

One of the major selling points is the family or individual can relax which motivates them to return to the remote island or family get away.  The cultural experience is the major attraction because the tourist want to feel like they are home relaxing with good food and service as a prerequisite. The cultural experience is very critical because many times these vacation packages include the children which most parents enjoy watching their children learn about new cultures. The more the resort is cultural friendly, the more tourist want to visit the location multiple times. The demand for cultural experiences cannot be underestimated such as the family traveling thousands of miles to visit the Philippines or Africa or Germany because they want to relax but the cultural experience is what the tourist wants to experience. In society, many groups associate global travel as someone that has been well educated and experience with dealing with different business environments and culture environment (Liu, 2014).  The cultural experience was evident with the Oktoberfest in Munich because all of the tourist and villages were dressed in historical Germany outfits and the entire town was design to reflect the old history and original buildings and stores. The colorful Munich costumes are reflected in all the previous pictures of the Oktoberfest as a selling point. The Oktoberfest natives used the German language to enhance the tourist cultural experience with eagerness to teach the tourist some basic words of German for easy acclimation to their surroundings. The Oktoberfest is about culture and history because the beer is the original beer that is made and brewed in Germany. In addition, Oktoberfest in Munich has tours for the people to enjoy and learn about the rich culture, landscape and historical significance of the territory. The best example of the cultural experience is the beer hall at the camping locations are so beautiful that the tourist want to spend all day in the camping hall. The well designed and colorful décor shows the rich and talented Germans who display their heritage in every building, every beer and every experience.

Conclusion

The tourism industry has become one the most flourishing travel activities in the world. The traditional vacation or tourist travel was considered to be domestic travel with occasional travel abroad. The international and domestic tourism travel has spread so quickly that millions of dollars of family’s disposable income is spent on tourism. Tourism has a positive impact on the economy of nations increasing employment, hotel revenues at an all-time high and the local transportation business is booming at resorts. The tourism not only impacts the economics but the social advantage. The paper clearly showed that the tourism growth is on the upswing while improving the developing countries employment base. The tourism industry both domestic and international is no longer just a domestic phenomenon but has move into the international market which has sustained entire country’s economics.  Tourism has a positive impact on the economy that increases food services, and retail sales at the vacation or resort location.

The recommendation to the tourist industry is they must keep the momentum with pricing comparisons because several of the travel locations are expensive and a price adjustment will bring millions of customers. The best example is the Disney World blue people that was selling the Blue Men performance at a very high price limit which many families could not afford the Disney attraction. The Disney marketing team decided to lower the price which led to the Blue Men performance selling out almost every night. The second recommendation is the distribution of alcohol must be monitored to ensure the tourist does not injury themselves with late hour’s intoxication. This can be accomplished in several ways such as all bar drinks are not sold after 11p.m which allows the tourist time to recover from a day of drinking. The 24 hour access to liquor is an accident waiting to happen.

The final recommendation is the resorts should provide discounts for any long lines that the families have to wait for recreational rides. The parents spend thousands of dollars on a package deal nevertheless, they do not get to utilize the ride or rollercoaster because the lines are too long. In addition, families waiting to ride the attraction in the hot or cold may cause the family not to enjoy the riding attraction.  The resort should make sure the parents are aware of the different ways to avoid long lines. The best example is Disney who has an Excess Magic Hours that parents can pay for early access which they have less lines. The big ride attractions like Space Mountain at Disney plan to ride early in the morning, the lines we be shorter. Another advantage to early morning is the children will be able to ride their favorite rides multiple times without having to wait on long lines. In addition, the family can get an early start that helps avoid the late crowds and the hot sun in the middle of the day. The family benefits from the smaller crowds because the family can stay together because all the lines have no waiting period.
