The Impact of the Heavy Reliance of the Media, Essay Example

The media derives its sources of information from the media conglomerates. These official resources are becoming increasingly limited and compressed. As such the concentration of ownership is leading to much more shared news.  The danger of this is that important messages may get lost in translation or in some cases even become reported erroneously.

The other issue is the lack of impartiality where a mutual relationship exists with a particular news source.  The news source may consider this a great conduit for obtaining news but it is bad for gaining independent viewpoints as the news is narrowly focused on one individuals opinion. In politics this might be a particular “spin” for the public not allowing full disclosure of the facts.

Finally, the subject of impartiality and independent reporting is important to the American people. This is the very foundation of democracy in terms of freedom of speech and accuracy of reporting. We need to see balanced reporting that represents both sides of the argument before any firm conclusions are presented.  The concept of media consolidation, geographical centralization and reporting relationships sometimes negate accuracy in this area.
