Throughout history, politicians have been concerned with impression the public in order to gain political support and increased standing. While modern politicians are still required to gain public support in order to remain in office or be elected for the first time, these individuals now must concern themselves with advertising themselves in a manner that is consistent with 21st century standards. During the previous few elections, voters have been concerned with the appearance, political opinions, and personal lives of the individuals that are running for a variety of political offices. The Internet and social media has allowed the lives of these individuals to transform from private to public, and it is essential for American politicians to learn how to cope with these changes if they wish to succeed.
The first time that the American people recognized the importance of a president’s stage presence occurred in the 1960 debates between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Prior to this debate, the American people were not accustomed to seeing the faces of political debaters, typically listening to these talks over the radio or reading about the min the newspaper. This debate was the first live demonstration between two individuals running for the President of the United States. Furthermore, it demonstrated that the appearance of a presidential candidate was an important factor in determining the overall success of the debate. It was evident that John F. Kennedy put more effort into his appearance, a factor that caused him to win the election. Individuals that heard the debate over the radio thought that Nixon was the better debater, but it was evident that appearance won over ideas. As a consequence, the way that politicians attempt to engage voters have shifted over the years.
In the modern era, society relies heavily on the Internet in order to gain news stories and on social media to communicate ideas. Therefore, the best political candidates are those who are able to publicize themselves online through ads and periodicals and who are able to engage potential voters to share what they post and to discuss their support publicly (Pogue 32). In the modern era, a lot of information can transition quickly from person to person. While it is difficult to take advantage of this, the Internet and social media can either make or break a reputation.
In the age of the Internet and social media, it is essential for politicians to be careful about what they do or say, because this information can be quickly leaked online (Noonan A11). For example, the moment that Hilary Clinton learned that her e-mail was hacked, the rest of the nation knew as well. This was a damaging mistake because the world quickly learned that she was handling her Secretary of State business on her personal e-mail account. While some voters may forget about this incident before her presidential campaign begins, it is important to note that this error will never be fully forgotten because it has earned a permanent place on the Internet.
In conclusion, modern politicians have to be increasingly concerned about what they do and say because these actions and statements can be recorded on the Internet and on social media. It is important for these individuals to use this to their advantage. If positive, promotional messages are spread, this will enhance their ability to enter and remain in office. However, if these are negative, it may hurt their chance for success. Ultimately, politicians need to be highly concerned with their public relations and may need to work closely with professionals to ensure that their image is being conveyed in a manner that is beneficial to them.
