The Importance of Leadership, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 865

Essay

Leadership is a critical factor in the development of a successful nursing practice, as leaders embody the core values and principles of the profession and support the objectives in providing care and treatment to patients. It is important for nurses to be effective leaders because the profession requires strong, committed, and dedicated leaders who support and engage nurses throughout the practice environment. Nurses must be prepared to effectively manage a variety of tasks at the leadership level and must be able to recognize the value of advancing the objectives of nursing practice so that patient care quality is optimize at all times. Therefore, nurse leaders must be flexible and able to adapt to a variety of circumstances in order to accomplish the objectives of the profession. Nurses must be able to adapt to a variety of conditions and make recommendations that are based upon prior evidence; therefore, they must be prepared to adapt to different cultures, experiences, and other differences that will influence how nurses respond to patients and provide them with the tools to promote recovery (Corazzini et.al, 2014). From this perspective, it may be argued that cultural differences and other forms of diversity are key drivers of change within the nursing profession and in communicating with patients at a high level (Corazzini et.al, 2014).

From a leadership perspective, nurses must be prepared to work with a variety of cultures and diverse population groups on a regular basis; therefore, I have adopted an adaptive leadership style as a primary focus area because this approach will provide me with greater flexibility and strength in advancing patient care needs and in promoting new strategies to improve the practice setting (Corazzini et.al, 2014). I believe that working with an adaptive approach will permit unique perspectives regarding nursing and how to best manage the needs of patients on a continuous basis (Corazzini et.al, 2014). My leadership style has been largely effective in my work to date and has provided me with a number of ethical perspectives regarding the practice environment. It is important to adopt ethical approaches to common nursing problems as a means of exploring the options that are available to nurses in treating their patients, while also adapting ethical considerations in other areas (Storch, Makaroff, Pauly, & Newton, 2013). I believe that it is essential that nurses are able to contribute as leaders in an effective manner that will make a difference in the lives of other patients, as well as staff nurses. It is necessary to support ethical decision-making at all levels of nursing practice, and by serving in a leadership capacity, to be mindful of the challenges of nursing practice as they impact patient care and ethical decision-making (Storch et.al, 2013).

As a professional nurse, it is my responsibility to be an effective communicator in a leadership capacity so that I am able to set an example for others to follow. In this context, I must continue to make decisions that are not only ethically responsible, but which also support the nursing profession and the patients who are served. Nursing leadership requires a number of factors in order to achieve successful outcomes, and this reflects the importance of establishing a framework to expand leadership characteristics and to adapt leadership to a variety of settings, including work, school, and in social situations (Storch et.al, 2013). I believe that nurse leaders must demonstrate their knowledge and provide expertise in a variety of areas, many of which support continuous improvement in nursing practice. This process will expand the knowledge and resources that are required to accomplish the objectives of the nursing profession, while also supporting innovation and cohesiveness in communications with other nurses. These tools will reflect the importance of achieving new perspectives regarding nursing and the role of leaders in this capacity. I am confident that my leadership skillset will continue to grow and thrive, but it is also important to learn new approaches to nursing practice that will have a lasting impact on patient care and nursing-related outcomes.
